Volunteer Opportunity - VHS Survey at Lake Anna!

Calling all nature enthusiasts! Looking for a chance to learn more about your local wildlife while also helping carry out research?!

Check out the 2022 Virginia Herpetological Society at Lake Anna State Park in Spotsylvania Co, VA! There are two upcoming dates: -Saturday, May 14th from 2 pm - 8 pm -Sunday, June 19th from 9 am - 3 pm

Sign up is required and can be done so via this link: Please be sure to only sign up for the date in which you are able to attend!

Information about attending a survey: -Restroom facilities will be available -Please be sure to bring snacks, water, and a lunch -You will be working in woodland environments, so make sure to wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for mosquitoes and ticks *Email Matt Neff,, with any questions!

A little about Lake Anna survey: Virginia Herpetological Society will be leading another survey at Lake Anna State Park in Spotsylvania Co. The VHS had its 2018 Annual Spring Survey here and found 38 species of reptiles and amphibians, including 10 new county records, but there are still a potential of 17 species waiting to be uncovered in Spotsylvania County. Lake Anna State Park is a 1,200 hectare park with wetlands, woodland habitats, and open fields. The lake was created in 1971 as a source for cooling water for a nearby power plant and previously, the area was known as Gold Hill when gold was discovered in the early 1800’s.
